CV Rory Hadden

Rory Hadden

Dr Rory Hadden is a Reader at the Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh. After completing his PhD on smouldering combustion at the University of Edinburgh, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Western Ontario and Imperial College London. His research has broadly focussed on developing more complete understanding of fire phenomena with particular emphasis on the solid phase (including pyrolysis and smouldering) and developing methods to link the solid phase and gas phase phenomena during burning and flame spread. Recently he has developed interest in better quantification the gaseous products of pyrolysis and combustion. This work has impact in understanding the spread of wildfires, managing the hazards of engineered timber products in the built environment, the development of advanced composite materials and the development of government policy.

At Edinburgh, he teaches broadly on fire science at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is the local programme director of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programme International Masters in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE, with Universities of Ghent, Lund and UPC Barcelona). Dr Hadden has given guest lectures and CPD internationally and has provided expert advice to a range of organisations including the Metropolitan Police Service and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (UK).
